Venus Hill is a SKA-"crossover" band. The repertoire consists of our own material, influenced by jamaican SKA, and mixed with other musical genres like metal, rock, reggae etc. With this mixture, Venus Hill gives its own twist to SKA.
This band from Amsterdam started in 1997 and since than expanded into ten members; drum, bass, guitar, three girls on vocals, two trumpets, trombone and sax.
After a few gigs and many enthusiastic reactions, they recorded a short demo in 1998.
From march 1999 Venus Hill started performing on a regular bases, (average 2 or 3 times a month). They participated in the "Amsterdamse Popprijs 1999", ended up second in the "Melody Line bandcompetition 1999". They've been broadcasted several times on "Cult TV" and the demo was played on "Kink FM". Venus Hill has had many shows in Amsterdam; but also outside Amsterdam Venus Hill is starting to build a name for it self and the interest in the band is growing rapidly. They were for example the support act of the Skalatones in de Effenaar in Eindhoven.
After 20 gigs and a period of working on new matterial, Venus Hill had a sharp kickoff in January 2000; a sold out and completely stacked Winston Kingdom and a record in liquor and ticked sale that evening again. The down side was, that it was in fact too crowded and that a lot of people had to go home without seeing anything of the band because they couldn't get in. Some highlights were that they played with Dr Ring Ding & the Senior All-stars in "Ekko", they had a show on the "CRAWL SKA festival" (Tagrijn) and at Amsterdam Surf Hard (Melkweg). even more highlights were that they played at one of the greatest and largest festivals in Holland (Lowlands 2000), the Heineken Skank Party with Stars of Ska! (Melkweg), in TV show "ff wat anders" (Vara) en at 013 with the Beatbusters. After another 18 gigs there's more coming up!!
In the year 2001 Venus Hill played for over 3000 people at Paasrock with Kane en de Dijk, and will be on other large festivals this summer, like Maasboulevardfestival and Atmosphere Open Air festival, City-a-Live and Access to Amsterdam. They appear on a french international compilation CD. And last but not least they presented very successfully their CD in the Melkweg last April 2002!! The reactions are very positive! Just now we were broadcasted at national radio 3FM. We are on our way!!
This year 2003 we had fun gigs and festivals. We played at Vaals on an international Ska-Reggae festival which was very nice. We appeared on a russian and a german compilation. We recorded 3 songs which appeared on a single this year. And we're moving on to Germany, thanks to dj Vogel who has organised a tour for us in october! It was great! We defenitely will come back because we love Germany. We just keep moving on, having lots of fun en great gigs.
